2023 is the year of community, so what better way to get social than picking up a multiplayer game to try with friends, family, or just your partner.

We’ve collated the 9 most anticipated multiplayer games launching this year, so you can start planning what’s next for a date night or group hang.

Wild Hearts (16 February 2023)

Wild Hearts is a unique twist on the hunting game, where technology gives you a fighting chance against fearsome nature-infused beasts. In a map inspired by feudal Japan, you can stalk alone or tackle with up to three friends in seamless online co-op.

The visuals look like Campy Sekiro meets Angry Pokemon, so if you like swinging around a sword and encountering creatives with elemental powers, this will be a fun game for you and your crew.

Sons of the Forest (23 February 2023)

Sons of the Forest is a thrilling open-world simulator where you can survive alone or drag along up to eight of your friends to craft and build. You are sent to find a missing billionaire on a remote, cannibal-infested island, so having friends will definitely help the hellscape feel less daunting.

There’s been a lot of talk about whether or not this is a sequel or a spin-off to The Forest (also made by Endnight Games), but it seems to be an entirely new experience with improved graphics and unique story.

The Day Before (1 March 2023)

The Day Before is an open-world survival MMO (massively multiplayer online) set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by the flesh-hungry infected. But that’s not all because survivors are also killing each other for food, weapons, and cars.

With online co-op you can choose PVP (player vs player) or PVE (player vs environment/AI) to scavenge and survive. If games like The Division or The Last of Us’s multiplayer mode is any indication, this will be great for groups of long-distance, casual gamers who still want to shoot and loot through a detailed map.

Skull and Bones (9 March 2023)

Skull and Bones is an upcoming action-adventure game with a treasure trove to explore in each 20-person server. Sail to the furthest reaches of the Indian Ocean, from the coasts of Africa to the East Indies, to discover distinct regions each with their own unique ecosystems.

There’s been a bit of controversy given how long this game has taken to reach our “shores” – originally announced in 2017 for a 2018 release, then delayed multiple times. Sea of Thieves has held the multiplayer pirate-sim genre captive for far too long, so let’s see if this visually-detailed and story-rich game is worthy competition once it finally launches.

Crime Boss: Rockay City (28 March 2023)

Crime Boss: Rockay City is an organized crime game combining first-person shooter action and turf wars for solo players or a quad of friends. Take on the role of Travis Baker (voiced by Reservoir Dogs actor Michael Madsen) – a man with his sights set on becoming the new King of Rockay City, one crime at a time.

Everyone is talking about this game’s stacked cast list which includes Chuck Norris, Danny Trejo, Kim Basinger, Danny Glover, Michael Rooker, Damion Poiter, and even Vanilla Ice. With great voice actors comes great entertainment, so strap in for this GTA rival.

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League (26 May 2023)

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an action-adventure third-person shooter from Rocksteady Studios, creators of the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series. It features an original narrative set within an expansive open-world city of Metropolis. Four DC super-villains are put on a collision course with an invading alien force and DC super heroes who are now laser-focused on destroying the city they once vowed to protect. All the while, the Suicide Squad must be mindful of the lethal explosives implanted in their heads that could go off at the first sign of defiance.

After the success of the latest Suicide Squad film, it feels right that a game would come along allowing film-lovers and gamers to take down the Justice League alone in single-player or team up in 4-player co-op. Each squad member has their own unique move-set with enhanced traversal abilities to freely explore the dynamic open-world of Metropolis, along with a variety of weapons to customize and skills to master. What more could a super gamer want?

Minecraft Legends (Spring 2023)

Minecraft Legends invites players to discover the mysteries of the Overworld in its new action strategy game with classic blocky visuals. This four-player game lets you lead your allies in heroic battles to defend against destructive Piglins.

Whether you love it or can’t stand it, Minecraft has defined modern gaming and captured countless world records including Largest Indie Game Convention with 7,500 people attending MineCon in 2013. Developers have invited fans to explore a familiar yet mysterious land, full of diverse life, lush biomes and rich resources … but this paradise is on the brink of destruction.

Nightingale (Spring 2023)

Nightingale is a first-person, PVE, open-world survival crafting game played solo or cooperatively with friends. Build, craft, fight and explore as you venture through mystical portals into a variety of amazing and fantastical realms.

This mythical game is great for lovers of fantasy, mystery and twisted nature, and will launch with capabilities to support up to 10 co-op players in a single game. So, gather a curious crew and await the exact launch date announcement.

Atlas Fallen (31 December 2023)

Atlas Fallen invites players to glide the sands of a timeless land, filled with ancient dangers, mysteries and fragments of the past. Hunt legendary monsters using powerful, shape-shifting weapons and devastating sand-powered abilities in spectacular, super-powered combat. Or liberate mankind from the oppression of corrupted gods.

If you’ve ever thought that Dark Souls was too dark, or maybe your partner is obsessed with Elden Ring and you don’t get the hype, this two-player co-op will have the perfect balance of exploration and fighting for you both.
