<h2>How we're helping out London</h2>
One of the millions of people choosing to give up their spare time is our very own Jenny Gois who has been volunteering at her local school for six years.&nbsp;

&ldquo;I am a busy Mum of three, working full time, but I still make time to volunteer, I feel it&rsquo;s important and gives me a sense of satisfaction knowing that I am making a difference.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Jenny initially began organising dance events and is now a Chairperson of PTFA (Malcolm Sargent PTFA). She was recently in charge of the Summer Fayre where they managed to raise &pound;4,500 for the school. &ldquo;It was a fantastic event, very well supported by the school and the community and our first really big event since COVID hit in 2020&rdquo;.&nbsp;

Jenny loves being part of the PTFA mostly because she can help enhance the school curriculum to enrich the children&rsquo;s time while they are at school doing activities and events they love. They do many events, including Summer Fairs, Discos, Christmas Fairs, Sweet Treats at Christmas, Christmas Cards, Bingo, Lolly Friday (in the hot weather), and second-hand uniform sales (becoming even more popular in the current climate).&nbsp; &nbsp;

&ldquo;My own children have been lucky enough to benefit from the PTFA fundraising during their time at the school, seeing a new art area, trim trail, new library, overhaul of the IT suite, plus lots more over the years including trips, visits from the Life Bus (teaching them how to live healthy lives and the risks from drugs, alcohol and obesity), bike ability and funding the Year 6 Leavers event on an annual basis, just to name a few.&rdquo;&nbsp;

Jenny&rsquo;s experiences only emphasise how invaluable volunteering is for London&rsquo;s communities. It brings people together in different ways, helping to build stronger and more positive relationships. That&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;ve introduced our internal Volunteer Programme, offering all employees two paid days off to volunteer at any of the charities we support. Formally known as the &ldquo;Father of Black History&rdquo;, American historian, author, journalist and scholar Carter G Woodson dedicated his life to promoting black history in schools. His great efforts led to the creation of the more widely known &lsquo;Black History Month.&rsquo;

<h2>When was Black History Month first acknowledged? &nbsp;</h2>
First celebrated in February 1976 in the US, this date coincided with the births of both former President Abraham Lincoln and escaped slave turned iconic activist Frederick Douglass.
Akyaaba Addai-Sebo set up Black History Month in the UK and chose October to align with the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emancipation. He also hoped this would be the best time to incorporate Black History into British schools by inspiring young people just returning from their summer holidays.

The US, Germany and Canada celebrate Black History Month in February. Whereas the Netherlands, UK and Ireland choose to commemorate the event in October.

The month offers an opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the notable contributions to British history from those with African or Caribbean heritage. Without Black History Month, the achievements of many renowned black figures would otherwise be overlooked.
Some also feel that the western school history curriculum often focuses on the achievements and contributions of white figures in the traditional key historical events. Black History Month offers an opportunity to shed light on the unseen black minority groups (such as the Windrush generation) that were also fundamental to the success of these events.

What is Black History Month and why does it matter?

We believe access to reliable broadband empowers communities and helps to bridge the digital divide. That&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;ve teamed up with <a href="https://www.ageuk.org.uk/london/">Age UK London</a>, a charity campaigning for an age-friendly London, to help spread awareness on the connectivity issues affecting older Londoners. &nbsp;
&nbsp;

<h2>Why some Londoners are struggling to stay connected&nbsp;</h2>
Our latest research published with Age UK London has found that nearly half (43%) of Londoners over the age of 60 have struggled to make GP appointments, pay bills or access government services because they&rsquo;ve been unable to keep up with broadband and mobile data payments. Our findings have brought to light a growing issue across this age group which is widening the digital divide. &nbsp;
Our research also found that 71% of over-60s agree that having internet access is essential to modern life. Sadly, 14% of those polled say they are not able to access their daily messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, which leads to them feeling isolated and&nbsp;lonely.&nbsp;&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<h2>The government response&nbsp;</h2>
The UK Government has called on broadband providers to do more to help ease the burden on customers due to the cost-of-living crisis. Most networks have launched &lsquo;social tariff&rsquo; broadband packages that require customers to prove they are on Universal Credit in order to be eligible. &nbsp;
However, Age UK London has pointed out that pensioners are excluded by most providers offering social tariffs. Universal Credit is only available to those under the age of 67. Those on very low incomes are eligible to claim Pension Credit rather than Universal Credit. So many are not eligible for the social tariffs currently on the market. In fact, our findings have shown that 43% of Londoners over 60 will repeatedly run out of data before the end of each month.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<h2>Making broadband more accessible&nbsp;</h2>
In today&rsquo;s current social climate, it is crucial that Londoners continue to stay connected. That&rsquo;s why we&rsquo;ve re-introduced our&nbsp;<a href="https://communityfibre.co.uk/35-mbps" rel="follow">Essential 35 Mbps Fibre Broadband package</a>&nbsp;<a href="#_edn1" rel="follow">[*]</a>&nbsp;and increased its speed from 10 Mbps to 35 Mbps. At just &pound;12.50 a month, it is the most affordable and accessible essential tariff on the market, enabling even more Londoners to access a reliable broadband connection.
Plus, we are currently the only broadband provider that does not ask customers to jump through hoops and prove eligibility to get the most value for their budget.<a href="https://help.communityfibre.co.uk/troubleshooting" rel="follow"></a>
