With predictions that internet usage is set to increase to 63 million Brits online in the next 5 years, the UK&rsquo;s fastest record-breaking rapper has today released a brand-new track that packs the history of the internet into a lightning-fast, 60 second rap.

The track comes following new research from London&rsquo;s best quality broadband, <a href="mailto:https://communityfibre.co.uk/">Community Fibre</a>, revealing just how critical the internet has become - with three in five (62%) Brits admitting they wouldn&rsquo;t be able to survive without the internet. 
&nbsp;
To help the UK appreciate just how far the internet has come, Community Fibre - the experts in super-fast fibre broadband speeds - has recruited Harry Shotta, the legendary rapper heralded for his fast rhymes, to give a &lsquo;history lesson&rsquo; on the internet. 
&nbsp;
Known for breaking the Guinness World Record for the number of words in a track, previously held by Eminem, Shotta&rsquo;s new track captures the history of the internet and key moments since its inception, with nods to the good old days of MSN, as well as to current day TikTok trends. 
&nbsp;
As inspiration for the track, the research reveals the generational divide when it comes to digital literacy, with this attitude gap across age groups in the UK now bigger than ever. Uncovering Gen Z&rsquo;s unfamiliarity with some of the technology once synonymous with the internet age, the research found only one in five Gen Zs have used a dial up modem, and just over a third (35%) have used a floppy disc. Old school social media is also unknown to Gen Z, with only 16% having used Bebo, and only a quarter admitting to having used MySpace - compared to nearly half (48%) of Millennials.

But while the types of digital technologies and social platforms have evolved over the internet age, the generational divide is less prevalent when it comes to internet usage in general, with the internet now a key part of life for older generations too. 
&nbsp;
Looking at speeds, the internet is now so fast paced that expectations are higher than ever. In fact, for Gen X, some of whom have had the internet for less than half their lives, admit they dislike waiting more than a few seconds for something to buffer online (66%). Surprisingly, they out rank Gen Z (56%) and Millennials (54%), with the younger generations found to be slightly more patient with load times.

Discussing his creation of the track, Harry Shotta, said: &ldquo;There&rsquo;s no doubt the internet has come an impressively long way in what really is a short amount of time. From all the things we all now use it for, to how fast it has become, I think we all have moments where we take it for granted. 
&nbsp;
&ldquo;Covering the broad history of the internet in just 60 seconds wasn&rsquo;t a small feat but doing it with Community Fibre has been a blast. As someone who gets a kick out of a speed challenge and trying to get in as many words as possible, it made sense to join forces with London&rsquo;s fastest fibre broadband provider to create something fun.&rdquo;

With an insight into the evolution of the internet, the research found that the majority of Boomers (71%) and Gen X (75%) first used the internet via a dial modem through a desktop computer. Meanwhile, the experience for digital natives has long been on the go, with two in five (40%) Gen Zs first logging in online via the WiFi on their smartphone.

Graeme Oxby, Chief Executive Officer of Community Fibre, commented: &ldquo;As our new research shows, there&rsquo;s no question that the internet is a critical part of our everyday lives. <h2 id="digitalswitchover">What is the digital switchover 2025?</h2>
Traditional phone systems like landlines are making way for modern digital alternatives like VoIP (<a href="https://www.fcc.gov/general/voice-over-internet-protocol-voip">Voice over Internet Protocol</a>) to make sure these services continue to run smoothly.&nbsp;If you use a landline at home, this change will affect you.
Even though the official switch to digital services isn&rsquo;t until the end of 2025, many companies are already adopting VoIP. Openreach, the BT group company that takes care of phone and traditional broadband lines across the UK, has directed many customers to set up a new, alternate digital phone service themselves, <a href="https://www.bt.com/help/landline/digital-voice--how-do-i-set-up-my-service-">BT Digital Voice</a>.&nbsp;

<h2 id="whowillbeaffected">Who will be affected by the digital switchover?</h2>
Remember, this change isn&rsquo;t just for BT users &mdash; it&rsquo;s an industry-wide shift that impacts all fixed-line (landline) phone services. So it might be a good idea to start thinking about moving to digital sooner rather than later.

<h2 id="whyisithappening">Why is the analogue copper landline network being switched off?</h2>
The first copper phone lines were established way back in 1877 to send voice data (calls) exclusively. As with many technologies, these analogue landlines are no longer fit for purpose and are getting pricier to maintain. This now means the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) needs an upgrade. But the great news is that transitioning to digital technology&mdash;like making calls over the internet&mdash;is more budget-friendly and can also give us clearer calls and faster connections.
In 1977, fibre optic lines were introduced. These allowed far more data, not just voice calls, to be sent and laid the foundation for our current broadband networks.
When PSTN gets switched off, those old copper wires will be retired. That means everything connected to them&mdash;like landline phones and other systems&mdash;will need an internet connection to keep working.
&nbsp;
<h2 id="whichproviders">Which providers will be affected by the PTSN switch-off?</h2>
Undoubtedly, any provider who uses the old PTSN phone system will be affected, so it&rsquo;s best to check with your current provider if you are unsure. However, some companies are already ahead of the curve and are utilising fibre optic broadband to deliver reliable digital voice services, like our&nbsp;<a href="https://communityfibre.co.uk/landline">Calls service</a>.
National providers like BT, Sky, and TalkTalk (who rely on&nbsp;<a href="https://www.openreach.com/broadband-network#:~:text=We're%20glad%20you%20asked,selling%20services%20in%20your%20area.">Openreach&rsquo;s infrastructure</a>) have different timelines for making this switch mandatory. They&rsquo;re aiming to have all home customers using digital technology by 2025.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
<h2 id="isitonlyphones">Is it only phones that will be affected by the analogue switch-off?</h2>
Unfortunately, not. This switch isn&rsquo;t just about landline phones. It&rsquo;ll impact anything connected to PSTN, like alarms, CCTV, and door-entry systems. It&rsquo;s a good idea to check with your provider to avoid any hiccups when the switch happens. Make sure these systems are compatible with the digital setup or if they need an upgrade.
For instance, there are a number of scenarios where things aren&rsquo;t quite that simple for customers needing to make the switch:
<ul>
<li>If your main telephone is plugged into a socket that is not near your broadband router, then you will need to run a cable from the telephone to your router.</li>
<li>You might not know which telephone socket is your main socket, or someone may have hidden it behind cupboards or other furniture.</li>
<li>If you have any telephones that are plugged into extension sockets around your home, they will probably stop working when the switch happens.</li>
<li>If you have other devices (such as your intruder alarm) plugged into extension sockets around your house, they will probably stop working.</li>
<li>Some types of devices, such as fax machines, modems and assisted living devices, are incompatible with the new &lsquo;Digital Voice&rsquo; service and will stop working.</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
<h2 id="whichcustomers">Which customers are most at risk of losing connectivity during the landline switch-off?&nbsp;</h2>
If you use devices that are directly linked to your phone line (like telemetry devices), you should speak to the provider of those services to check if they will be compatible with the new digital system. But here are some examples of other devices that may also be affected:&nbsp;
<h4>Textphones&nbsp;</h4>
These nifty phones have a keyboard and a screen, perfect for deaf users as they can type messages instead of talking on the phone. Some different textphone models have been tested by making text calls on IP networks, and they continued to work. However, the call quality for these devices was found to be affected if there was a lot of other data on the line. It&rsquo;s good to note that the switch to IP won&rsquo;t impact the free text relay service on the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bt.relayuk&amp;hl=en_GB&amp;gl=US&amp;pli=1">Relay UK app</a>. You can use this app on your phone, tablet, laptop, or PC.&nbsp;
<h4>Amplified phones</h4>
Designed especially for people with hearing loss, these phones have louder volume and better pitch control. The good news is, when tested, all the amplified phones performed well, even when extra data could cause interference.
<h4>Intruder and telecare alarms&nbsp;</h4>
Telecare alarms automatically alert help, like a family member or medical aid, when someone presses a button. Intruder alarms safeguard your home against break-ins. If your current alarms rely on the old analogue system, you&rsquo;ll need to upgrade your system. But most modern devices should work fine with the new IP setup.

<h2 id="powercut">What happens to a digital phone line if there&rsquo;s a power cut or broadband is down?</h2>
The PTSN analogue phone system is linked to your local telephone exchange which has its own power supply. This means that if your electricity supply isn&rsquo;t working, you&rsquo;ll still be able to make calls if your electricity is down.&nbsp;
This will change with the new digital service as it will rely on your electricity to continue working.&nbsp;This means that&nbsp;if there&rsquo;s a power cut or network outage, your landline won&rsquo;t work.&nbsp;Also, any other gadgets or systems connected to it won&rsquo;t work during a power outage either.
Now, there are ways around this. You could get a battery backup for your internet router. That way, even if the power&rsquo;s out, you can still get online. And it&rsquo;s always handy to have a mobile phone as a backup too (for instance, if you need to call emergency services).

The announcement comes as research found almost three-quarters (71%)* of people surveyed now view broadband as an essential utility, and no longer simply a nice-to-have, with 1 in 10 regularly struggling to access vital services like GP appointments, online banking, and government websites as a result of poor internet connection.

<h5>Free prize draw is open to new Community Fibre customers only. You may not enter the draw if you have been a Community Fibre customer in the last 3 months or longer.</h5>
<h5>To be eligible to enter the free prize draw, entrants should live within Community Fibre&rsquo;s live network footprint. Those who do not live within Community Fibre&rsquo;s live network footprint can enter the prize draw but will not be eligible to receive any prize. Anyone entering the free prize draw will be given the option to sign up to Community Fibre&rsquo;s registered interest mailing list, to receive marketing correspondence as to when Community Fibre&rsquo;s network will become available in their area.</h5>
<h5>Community Fibre Limited employees and anyone professionally associated with Community Fibre are excluded from entering the draw.</h5>
<h5>To enter, entrants must submit their details via the free prize draw entry form at communityfibre.co.uk/1mhomes. Entrants can only submit one entry into the draw.</h5>
<h5>By entering the free prize draw, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and over 18, and that you are eligible to receive any prizes that may be awarded to you.&nbsp;</h5>
<h5>The Prize</h5>
<h5>The winning prize will be a 1,000 Mbps 12-month free period Community Fibre broadband connection.</h5>
<h5>Ten 1,000 Mbps 12-month free period Community Fibre broadband connections are available to be won.</h5>
<h5>The prize is non-transferable and non-exchangeable, and no cash alternatives will be provided.</h5>
<h5>We reserve the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value if circumstances beyond our control require doing so.</h5>
<h5>Community Fibre Limited's decision on any aspect of the free prize draw is final and binding, and no correspondence will be entered into about it.</h5>
<h5>Free Prize Draw Winner &nbsp;</h5>
<h5>The free prize draw will open on Monday, 2nd October 2023 at 00.01AM BST and will close on Thursday, 12th October 2023 at 23.59pm BST.</h5>
<h5>Ten entrants that meet the free prize draw eligibility criteria will be selected at random on Monday, 16th October 2023 and will be contacted via the email address provided by Friday 20th October at 23.59 BST by a member of the Community Fibre marketing team. Community Fibre will make two attempts to contact the winner via email.</h5>
<h5>If the winner does not respond to the emails informing them of their win within 5 days of the second email, they forfeit their right to the prize.</h5>
<h5>Recipients of the free prize draw must agree to share photography of themselves with Community Fibre Limited, to be posted publicly along with their name on its social media feeds for marketing purposes.</h5>
<h5>The winner agrees that by accepting the free prize draw prize, they will have access to a 1,000 Mbps 12-month free period Community Fibre broadband connection to the total of 365 calendar days from the point of installation.</h5>
<h5>We require your Direct Debit details so that we can set up the installation order and your Community Fibre account. You will not be charged anything unless you continue to take service after the 12 months free. If you wish to stop taking service from Community Fibre at the end of the 12 months free, you must give notice at least 30 days notice before the initial 12 month period ends. At the end of 12 months free you will be automatically moved onto our monthly rolling contract and charged at the prevailing out of contract rate at the time; currently &pound;29. Or you can call 0808 1966262 to enter into a new 12 or 24 month contract. (If you wish to take any other product from Community Fibre during the 12 months free, you will need to move to a new paid for contract).</h5>
<h5>Delivery of the Prize</h5>
<h5>Once the winner has acknowledged notice of the prize win, the winner will then receive the prize within 30 days based on installation availability for the property.&nbsp;</h5>
<h5>Data Protection and Publicity</h5>
<h5>You agree that any personal information that you provide when entering the free prize draw will be used by Community Fibre Limited for the purposes of administering the free prize draw and for the other purposes as specified in our Privacy Policy.</h5>

London, UK: Gold medallist and legendary athlete, Dame Kelly Holmes, surprised the residents of South Park Crescent in Lewisham this week with a lightning-fast broadband street upgrade, following reports it ranks as London's slowest street for broadband speeds in London, and the 8th slowest in the UK.
Dame Kelly joined Community Fibre&rsquo;s expert engineers to help oversee innovative fibre installations in residents&rsquo; houses, following recent research* by the provider which found the residents of South Park Crescent aren&rsquo;t alone in their broadband miseries, as two-thirds of Brits - amounting to 18.7M households - are dissatisfied with their current broadband provider.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
As a result, three-quarters of Brits say they experienced WiFi rage in the past year, triggered by poor and unreliable broadband connections. Further findings show that on average, a third of British houses experience WiFi rage on a weekly basis - amounting to almost 9.8M homes.
South Park Crescent resident Tom Cochrane, who has lived in the street for four years, explains, &rdquo;For too long, our street has suffered from appalling internet speed from the incumbent supplier, which has been so slow it is virtually impossible to do even the most basic tasks online let alone doing streaming, gaming, or working from home.&nbsp;
We were ecstatic to welcome Dame Kelly and the Community Fibre team into our home, to get 100% full fibre broadband installed.&rdquo;
